Jim came to
the Smith School in 1999 after 6
years with the U of M Office of
Students Affairs – Stamp Student
Union. He has served in various
capacities with the Smith School
ranging from class/lab support
to department operational over
sight.
In Jim’s
current role as Assistant
Director – Operations, he is
responsible for the department
support operations. These
activities include Smith IT help
desk, class and lab support
(AV), the Office of Smith IT
budget, Strategic Operational
Planning as well as various
special project initiatives such
as the VMH original wing
technology upgrade project and
the VMH Annex building project. |

Ernie started working for Smith
IT in 2001 after completing the
full-time MBA / MS – Information
Systems program here at Smith.
Previously he worked at
Washington University in St.
Louis as the Associate Director
for Computer Operations and for
Computer Sciences Corporation as
an IT consultant.
As the Assistant Director, Ernie
oversees computer operations,
enterprise architecture
planning, and research and
development work for Smith IT.
This includes systems such as
Lotus Notes email and
applications; Netware file and
print services; and the eSmith
application and UNet, Alumni and
MBA Networth information
portals.

Alice
(Hua) Zhang,

Alice joined the Office of Smith
IT in August 1999. Alice first
started supporting faculty with
their e-commerce class projects.
Then she switched to supporting
the school’s website. Now Alice
provides day to day support for
the Blackboard online course
system, including setting up
courses and responding to users’
requests. She is also
responsible for Smith school Web
server access requests and other
technical requests. In addition,
she maintains the Smith IT
website, the webmaster website
and Blackboard common question
website on the Smith school web
server. |

Arimah Williams, Helpdesk

Arimah has been with the Office
of Smith IT since July 2005
after working in various IT
roles in the private sector as
well as for state and local
governments in Maryland and
Virginia. In her capacity as IT
Coordinator, she handles and/or
escalates trouble calls that
come to the Smith IT Help Desk
via phone, email or walk-ins –
from new account requests to
wireless troubleshooting. Calls
also include hardware and
software assistance, network
issues, and application and
internet support. In addition,
Arimah also directly mentors,
trains and supervises the Smith
IT Help Desk team of student
technicians. |

Ben Rose, Audio Visual Operations
Engineer

Ben came to the Smith School in
2002 as part of the OIT/AV
services support team to support
the opening of the New Wing and
it’s technology classrooms. He
was transferred to the Smith IT
family in July of 2005. Ben
brings over 35 years of Audio
Visual experience in Operations,
Maintenance and Design.
In Ben’s current role as Audio
Visual Operations Engineer –he
is responsible for the daily
Audio Visual support activities
of the Smith School. These
activities include supervision
of the Audio Visual Team which
includes fulltime and student
technicians; coordination of
routine and unscheduled
maintenance and repairs;
Technical contact for special
events, programs or other events
with special AV needs; Smith
school technical advisor on
matters concerning VMH original
wing technology upgrade project
and the VMH Annex building
project. In a new role, Ben is
co-supervisor for the technical
staff that is housed at the
Ronald Reagan Building. |

Christopher Gleeson, Lotus Administrator

Chris
joined the Smith School in the
Fall of 2006 as the Lotus
Administrator. He is responsible
for the Lotus infrastructure,
including email, websites and
collaboration tools such as
Quickplace and Sametime.
Prior to
joining the School, Chris worked
as a Lotus Administrator for one
of the largest international law
firms in the world, based out of
Washington, D.C. He has more
than a decade of experience in
the IT field working with
various client-bases and
companies. |

Charles
(Chuck) LaHaie has been a
staff member at the University
of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith
School of Business since 1999.
Prior to joining the University,
he worked in the Office of
Economic Analysis of the U. S.
Securities and Exchange
Commission. Earlier he was a
Financial Analyst at the IBM
Corporation. Charles has a B.S.
degree in Mathematics from the
University of Detroit, an M.S.
degree in Computer and
Information Sciences from The
Ohio State University, and an
M.B.A. from the University of
Vermont. He also studied as a
Ph.D. student in the Department
of Finance at the University of
Maryland’s Robert H. Smith
School of Business. Published
works include
"Filtering Derivative Security
Valuations from Market Prices",
with Professor Dilip B. Madan
and Professor Robert J. Elliott,
in Mathematics of Derivative
Securities.
He
is responsible for procurement,
installation, maintenance, and
development of all financial
software products and databases
for the Smith School. These
include real-time services
(Reuters and Bloomberg) and
other products (CRSP, Compustat,
Thomson Financial, etc.). He is
also responsible for consulting
with and educating of faculty
and all students on how to use
these products and find
information. Additionally, he
assists the Finance faculty in
integrating the products and
services into the curriculum. |

Greg now is challenged by his
new job of Audio Visual
Support. One of his main areas
of support is for the Executive
Education Program. Greg also
assists in server operations,
helpdesk support, and classroom
support. Greg joined the Office
of Smith IT in December 2000 as

John joined the Smith IT team in
the Fall of 2003 as a Systems
Administrator. Prior to that,
he worked for OIT as part of the
Smith/OIT collaboration. In mid
2004, John changed roles, moving
to the Enterprise Applications
group within Smith IT. He is
responsible for maintaining the
eSmith Portal and remote
applications as well as
implementing various IT related
initiatives. |

Mary joined
the Smith staff in 1999. After
six years as Helpdesk Manager
she moved eagerly into this new
role in 2005. As Technology Outreach
Manager, she will provide
Blackboard training and work on
initiatives to help Faculty and
Staff utilize existing
technology resources
effectively. She will
continue to consult with new
faculty to make sure they have a
computer when they arrive, and
make recommendations when
existing resources don’t meet a
need. She will work with
various teams to develop and
maintain the software image in
the classrooms and labs each
semester. As part of the new STI
Center team, she will be able to
help recommend the development
of new initiatives and see them
implemented. Of course,
there are always those “other
duties” too! |

Michael joined the Smith School
in December 2002. He is the
liaison to the Profession
Programs and Services
department. His projects
improve the business functions
in the office and the MBA
experience for the students.
Some of his current projects
include, digital transfer of
application data to the UMD
Graduate school, on-line payment
process for deposits, and
implementing a eNewsletter
system.
Prior to joining the Smith
School, Michael work for 12
years at Covansys as a System
Analyst. His clients were in
the insurance and utilizes
industry. His technical
expertise was Lotus Notes.
His current certifications are
in Lotus Notes
and Java. He also has
experience with MS SQL, MS
Access, Perl Script, and ASP. |

Michael
joined the Smith staff in June
2005. Prior to joining the
University of MD, Robert H.
Smith Business Michael was in
the Navy where he discovered his
love for the IT field, he worked
at the White House doing
desk-top support and then as a
LAN Administrator for a medical
development company.
While as a Smith Staffer
Michael’s duties include
overseeing the installation and
maintenance of hardware,
software, on the LANs network,
troubleshoots hardware, software
and network problems, to support
and maintain in-house
audio-visual equipment. This
includes operating, maintaining,
repairing, and ensuring their
optimal performance. As an IT
coordinator Michael also
troubleshoots problem areas in a
timely and accurate fashion, and
provide end-user training and
assistance when required. |

Roy Corona,
Network Services Manager

Roy joined
the Office of Smith IT in
January 2005 as one of the
System Administrators. In 2006
he was made the Network Services
Manager. Roy is involved with
the day to day operation of
network infrastructure, server
maintenance, server upgrades,
new server installations of
Windows 2000, Windows 2003,
Linux, and application
operations for the business
school. A few of these
applications would include Lotus
Notes Email, Alumni Network, and
Blackberry Enterprise Server. |

Suzanne joined the Smith IT team
in the Fall of 2004 as a student
worker. She started out with
helping the Portal's team
develop small scripts and moved
onto helping with the eAlumni
Network. In Fall of 2006,
Suzanne became a full time staff
as a System Support Specialist.
Not only does she help with the
technical support of the eAlumni
Network, MBA Networth, and UNET,
she provides support for Notes
and account creations. |

Theresa
Cimino,

Theresa joined the Office of
Smith IT in July of 2004, after
working as a coordinator for the
Smith School Supply Chain
Management Center. Theresa
serves as the main contact for
new faculty and staff accounts.
Through the New Hires process
she makes sure that accounts are
created and distributed to
incoming faculty and staff.
In addition, she assists in the
day to day operations of Smith
IT by scheduling and
coordinating training classes
and meetings; maintaining
documentation for Smith IT;
drafting communications for the
community; and managing website
content for the Smith IT site.
She also handles department
procurement, licensing and
warranty issues. |

Tom joined the Office of Smith
IT staff in 2004 after
originally starting with the
Smith School in the Office of
Administration as the Director
of Operations in 2000. His role
in the Office of Smith IT
changed from a remote campus and
special projects coordinator to
the Help Desk manager in 2005.
As Help Desk Manager, he is
responsible for the 1st
and 2nd level
technology support of the Smith
School of Business on all
campuses including College Park,
Shady Grove, Washington D.C.,
Baltimore and international
locations. He has a team of 10
Technicians and 3 Coordinators
focused on the technical support
of Faculty, Staff, Students, and
Alumni. |

Vinesh Gupta, Assistant Director for
Technology - Marketing and M&O

Vinesh completed his MBA at
Smith in 2002. Prior to that, he
was a Master's student in
Engineering at WVU. Vinesh
joined the Smith School in
January 2006 after 7 years with
the Department of Geography,
BSOS, UMD. Vinesh's previous
positions include serving as
Systems Analyst and Manager of
IT Operations. He also worked on
NASA funded projects, served as
Co-PI, worked at NASA-GSFC to
work on EO-1 and Landsat 7
projects and worked with MCI
WorldCom.
In his current role as Assistant
Director for Technology for the
Marketing and Management
departments. Responsibilities
include serving as part of the
Smith IT team that leads and
manages support to faculty,
staff, and students for the
business school. Vinesh assists
with the technology direction of
these departments. Ongoing
responsibilities include project
management for IT projects,
research infrastructure
development, survey
methodologies, social science
research network paper series,
and Grid Computing for the
business school. |

Primary
duty is to support the
electronic audio visual and
computer technology used by the
Robert H. Smith School of
Business’ instructors to teach
students in all classrooms,
conference rooms, labs and
auditoriums within Van Munching
Hall. Such classroom technology
support can entail
troubleshooting of systems,
shared resource systems
operation, equipment
maintenance, end user training,
end user system assistance,
repairs to the component level,
and system upgrades. |
