Triantis Among '50 on Fire'

UMD Smith’s Dean Cited for Leading D.C. Education Innovation

Digital news source InTheCapital has named Alex Triantis, dean of the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, among “50 on Fire” in education for the Washington, D.C., region in 2014.

In its second year, 50 on Fire recognizes, according to its organizers, “the 50 most luminary, disruptive and newsworthy people and organizations across industries” who are “driving innovation in D.C. and beyond.”

Triantis, appointed in 2013 as Smith’s eighth dean, is described by InTheCapital as “well-known on and off campus for his incredible can-do attitude and relentless pursuit of excellence in business. ... Since his appointment, the school has received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to fund the Center for International Business Education and Research. The school also received its second largest gift in history, (totaling) $6 million (to establish the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets).”

Triantis joined the Smith faculty in 1996 and served as Department of Finance chair from 2006 to 2011. During that tenure, Smith launched a master’s degree program in finance, innovative undergraduate fellows programs, and the groundbreaking Center for Financial Policy, which connects faculty with Washington policymakers. He has engaged in executive programs and has been recognized for outstanding teaching, twice with the Krowe Award, Smith’s top honor.

Triantis received his 50 on Fire honor during a recent ceremony at The Howard Theatre. Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship Managing Director Elana Fine was an education category winner for 2013.

Other categories are Design, Dining and Retail, Government and Advocacy, Healthcare and Medicine, Marketing and Advertising, Real Estate and Architecture, Sports and Fitness, and Technology. Finalists, selected from 1,500-plus nominees, were reviewed and voted on by industry-specific panels of judges comprised of community leaders and influencers.
