Smith Staff Members Volunteer at "A Wider Circle"

Staff members from the Office of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business marked the first day in the office after the graduation of the Class of 2016 by volunteering with A Wider Circle, a local nonprofit dedicated to ending poverty in our community. Throughout the school year, Victor Mullins, associate dean of undergraduate studies, along with the department’s academic advisors, program directors and other staff members, encourage and support students who “give back” by helping those less fortunate.

On Monday, May 23, 2016, the group decided to lead by example and spent several hours sorting donated items such as household goods and appliances, clothing, toys, and books. They toured the newly-expanded professional development center, which includes a classroom, computer lab and a clothing center offering professional attire for both men and women preparing to enter the workforce.

In August, more than 80 freshmen in the Smith School's Business, Society and the Economy program will spend several hours volunteering at The Wider Circle as part of the 21st Annual College Park Scholars Service Day.

A Wider Circle previously collaborated with Smith faculty and staff for a professional clothing drive. In one year’s time, A Wider Circle has helped prepare over 1500 men and women for the workforce. To learn more about A Wider Circle, visit their website at www.awidercircle.org.
