Smith Professor Creates Entrepreneurship Program for Software & Mobile Apps Business in Belarus

James Sanders, adjunct professor in the management and organization department at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, recently conducted an action research project in Belarus, which was developed through the Smith School’s Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER).

Sanders conducted a training and technical assistance visit focused on developing a marketing and sales program for Belarus IT firms. Belarus has a large a growing IT business based on the strong engineering skills built during the soviet period. Belarus companies have been the technology development source for many of the very successful mobile apps and games.  A few companies have gone beyond technology development partnering to create marketing and sales programs. The most famous is World of Tanks game developer Wargaming.com.

The program is supported by USAID and is designed to build an infrastructure based at IPM business school in Minsk. The Smith activity involves creating and delivering a train the trainer program, developing technical assistance programs, and developing a web training program for country wide delivery. The Smith School partners with the Global Business School Network, for which it also serves as a executive board member, and Babson College in the delivery of this program.

The Belarus project builds on Sanders' International Entrepreneurship MBA course and similar development programs in Armenia, China, and Egypt.
