Smith Offers Gov’t Employees Business Analytics Workshop

The Office of Executive Education at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business has launched the Interagency Excellence Series; an open-enrollment program specifically for government employees. The next three-day workshop will be held August 25-27, 2015 and focus on business analytics. As organizations are facing more complex data and analysis challenges, they are also finding that equipping executives to lead such teams is challenging. Participants will learn how to use big data and business analytics to drive results within their agencies. Rather than learning to analyze each bit of data themselves, these GS13-15 level government employees will have the opportunity to learn how to manage a team of highly technical people and develop strategies for mentoring, training and retaining experts in the field. Participants will also learn how to get more value out of the data they already have access to, by learning ask the right questions.

Workshop faculty will include leading experts from the Smith School in healthcare informatics, technology management, procurement contract analysis, supply chain risk, and online information.

The ideal candidate is a mid to senior level manager GS13-15 who is overseeing the work of analytics professionals or data scientists. Professionals interested in gaining competency in Office of Personnel Management (OPM) executive core qualifications (ECQs) will also benefit from participating.

Following the Business Analytics workshop, the Interagency Excellence Series will host workshops in:

Interagency Influence | Sept. 21 - 25, 2015

This workshop is designed to help federal managers (GS 14-15) develop a range of skills and behaviors necessary to lead people and lead change in government. By learning to connect with those to whom you report; those who report to you; and those you seek to influence, you will become more effective in all your professional exchanges. You will learn to develop your story-telling skills, using your vision, values, and experience to inspire others to do their best at work.

Interagency Innovation | Sept. 22-25, 2015

Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS) data from many agencies indicates that many federal employees do not feel their creativity or innovation is recognized or rewarded. In general, despite the moon landings, Global Entry, tax e-filing and countless other game changers, government isn’t seen as a hotbed of new ideas. We are here to change all that.
