Smith Freshmen Attend Day of Service

Smith Freshmen Attend Day of Service

More than 70 freshmen in the College Park Scholars’ Business, Society & the Economy program (BSE) began their college life by completing a day of community service. On Friday, August 28, one day after having moved onto campus, the BSE students fanned out to several sites across Montgomery County dedicated to helping the homeless. Helped by several BSE sophomores, the students prepared and served meals, sorted and organized donations, landscaped gardens, offered manicures to clients and helped with whatever tasks needed to be done at each of the six sites.

Over the past 20 years, more than 16,000 students, faculty and staff at the University of Maryland have participated in this annual event. The BSE program is led by Mark Wellman, director of BSE and clinical professor of management and organization, and Claudia Donnelly, assistant director.

The BSE program is sponsored by the Robert H. Smith School of Business and is one of 12 interdisciplinary programs. College Park Scholars is an academic residential community for select freshmen and sophomores and upon successful completion of program requirements, provides students with a Citation Certificate for their permanent academic transcript.

“Service Day embodies a lot of what we strive to be – a good citizen of our  communities – people working together to do great things to make the world a little bit better,” said College Park Scholars Executive Director Marilee Lindemann.
