testHaluk Ünal is Professor of Finance at the Robert H. Smith School of Business of the University of Maryland, a fellow at the Wharton Financial Institutions Center, and research advisor at the Center for Financial Research, FDIC. He is also the Managing Editor of the Journal of Financial Services Research. He previously taught at the Ohio State University and at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He teaches corporate finance, management of financial institutions, and fixed income securities courses. He has won the Krowe teaching award for outstanding teaching at the Robert H. Smith School Business in 1991 and 1999, and was rated a Master Teacher by the MBA students in the 1997 edition of the Business Week's Guide to the Best Business Schools. Mr. Ünal holds doctorates in finance from Ohio State and in economics from Istanbul University, where he did his undergraduate work as well. Mr. Ünal also earned masters degree in accounting from Ohio State University. His current research focuses on pricing default risk, hedging using derivatives, bank privatization and Japanese banking, and mutual-to-stock conversions in the savings and loan industry. He is published in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Journal of Financial Services Research, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and Review of Derivatives Research. Mr. Ünal has been a consultant to the World Bank on issues relating
to the Mexican debt reduction and bank privatization and to the Peruvian
Bank Superintendency on issues relating to hedge accounting. He also served
as an expert witness for the U.S. Department of Justice. Internationally,
he delivered lectures in China, Mexico, Peru, Poland, and Turkey. He also held executive training programs on corporate finance, bank
management and fixed income finance for Fannie Mae. Hughes Network Systems,
and Oracle.
