The Decision, Operations and Information Technologies (DO&IT) Department at the Robert H. Smith School of Business:

  • Educates students and creates tomorrow’s leaders
  • Conducts high impact research relevant to policy and practice
  • Collaborates with industry and government to foster thought leadership

Information technology has transformed organizations, commerce, government and society.  Advances in technology, data analytics and our understanding of operations have combined to change the way organizations are structured and the way they function.  Courses in the Department provide students with an understanding of technology, social media, spreadsheet modeling, digital markets, data mining and predictive analysis, operations and supply chain, pricing and revenue management and project management. Department faculty conduct leading-edge research on these topics and bring the results into the classroom.

The Department offers instruction in the undergraduate, full-time MBA program, part-time programs, and Smith On-line MBA as well as an MS in IS program.  There are two research centers associated with DO&IT, the Center for Digital Innovation, Technology & Strategy and the Center for Health Information & Decision Systems.  Department faculty are highly ranked in the profession and among business school IT and operations management groups.  The faculty includes a mix of well-published research faculty who bring rich concepts to the classroom while experienced professional faculty members contribute their experience in industry and government to the curriculum.

Students with knowledge of information technology, data analytics and operations are highly sought after by all types of employers, and we encourage students to take courses in DO&IT to prepare for a rewarding career in business or government. Please feel free to contact individual faculty members about questions concerning programs, courses, research or other questions you may have.
