PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

PRELIMINARY WORKSHOP AGENDA

A variety of topics will be discussed at the workshop. A preliminary list is as follows:

- Methods for large data sets
- Models for dynamic data
- Modelling concurrent events in vast marketplaces
- Representative sampling from the Internet
- Dynamic mechanisms design
- Dynamic bid increment, Dynamic buy-it-now prices
- Bidder type clustering and classification
- Evolution of Word-Of-Mouth

The invited participants will be experts on one or several of these or other related topics.

UNIQUE WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITIES

The following aspects set this workshop apart from any other meeting in Statistics and IS:

Unique Workshop Database

A new and unique database of eCommerce transactions will be made available to all participants of the workshop. This database will be made available well before the start of the workshop and will be useful as a stimulant for discussion and exchange during the workshop. Participant will be asked to examine the database and come up with relevant problems, comments, methods, and/or analyses. Doctoral students seeking funding will be required to examine the databases and explore a particular eCommerce aspect of their choice (either analytical or domain-driven) which they will present at the workshop. The database will be unique and will be related to topics such as “The Evolutions of Online Markets - before and after the Crash.” Findings based on this database will be published in a special issue.

Unique Opportunity for Expansion of Statistics Interest Areas

The American Statistical Association (ASA) recently submitted their report to the NSF on “Statistics: Challenges and Opportunities for the 21st Century” (available at www.amstat.org/news/nsf4Aug04.pdf). In that report, the ASA points out opportunities for statisticians in Information Technology (Section 5.4), in particular in communications, networks and internet traffic. However, it fails to recognize the opportunities in Information Systems, and specifically in internet content and web transactions. Our workshop will be a unique opportunity for statistics to learn about this new and exciting area.

Unique Opportunity for Information Systems for Methodological Advancement

Researchers in IS deal with an ever increasing amount of data and data-related questions and problems. Our workshop will give the unique opportunity for IS researchers to discuss their problem and learn about conceptual issues and advanced methods from experts in statistics.

Unique Opportunity to build Collaboration

As this workshop is the first of its kind, it will present a unique opportunity for researchers from the different fields for exchange, to discuss problems and to start research collaboration.
