CAREER SKILLS

What Not to Put On Your Resume. A resume is in writing and you don’t get to “explain,” so be conservative. Focus on what you’re good at. Avoid anything that will elicit a possibly negative reaction from the hirer. When you’re asked about your strengths and weaknesses, it’s also to find out how much you know about yourself. Review suggested responses regarding your "weaknesses" at: http://gradschool.about.com/od/curriculumvita/a/resnot.htm .

Learn How Hiring Managers Think. Hiring managers look for any reason to reject applications, including typos and grammatical errors. They usually hire the zero-risk applicant who has proved he will solve their problems, not potentially create new ones. To be effective, your application — your personal marketing document — must instantly knock out hiring managers with concise, interesting, error-free descriptions of your relevant credentials. Review suggestions to improve your application material at: http://www.federaltimes.com/index.php?S=3301816 .

Eleven Commandments for Smart Negotiating. When the economy is weak many candidates wrongly feel that they have to accept what's offered or risk losing the offer. Whatever the economic climate, what matters is how you negotiate. Review principles that will allow you to effectively negotiate the terms of your new job in good times and in bad at: http://www.cfo.com/article.cfm/3009720 .

CAREER RESEARCH

Huge Increases in Government Hiring on the Horizon. Facing potential talent shortages in several key departments, including accounting, research and information technology, the government could prove to be the most fruitful source of opportunity for the nation’s growing number of jobseekers, Despite current economic conditions, the combination of projected actual retirements and other departures will result in a loss of about 550,000 employees by 2010, one-third of the full-time federal civilian workforce. According to the Office of Personnel Management, financial management occupations within the government are expected to see the biggest exodus of workers: 17.9 percent of the total retirees. Sustainability Means Opportunities for those Firms Acting Globally to help Meet their Clients’ Demands. How To Get To the Top. Finance chiefs are most likely to get the top job, though experience in operations — running parts of the company — is also essential. Another factor in reaching the top is whether you stay with the company you joined as a youngster. Research finds that "lifers" get to the top in 22 years (in America) and 24 years in Europe. "Hoppers" who jump between four or more companies, by contrast, take at least 26 years on average to become chief executives. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Building Self-Confidence. All other things being equal, self-confidence is often the single ingredient that distinguishes a successful person from someone less successful. Self-confident people are generally more positive – they believe in themselves and their abilities, and they also believe in the wonders of living life to the full. Building self-confidence is readily achievable, just as long as you have the focus and determination to carry things through. Review steps to self-confidence at: http://www.mindtools.com/selfconf.html .

Does Their Corporate Culture Pass Your Sniff Test? It's imperative to discover the true nature of corporate culture before you accept a job offer. Beyond newsstand publications try the Harvard Business Review, HR trades and journals. Another option is networking with people who either currently or recently worked in the organization. Mining social media sites can provide you with a fast and easy source for those contacts. You may be surprised to learn that employees and former employees are only too happy to receive your unsolicited e-mail and to offer you guidance. Read more at: http://blog.fastcompany.com/experts/rweston/2007/05/does_their_corporate_culture_p.html .

What You Don't Know about Headhunters: 10 Tips. It is smarter to forge relationships with recruiters when you are not in a hurry to move — that way, a recruiter could contact you as positions became available. Not only is that how they prefer to work, it's a far surer path to making a change. Learn what makes recruiters tick at: http://www.cfo.com/article.cfm/10553203 .
