Smith School Policies and Guidelines
In the spirit of collaboration, the Smith School Office of Career
Services recommends your attention to the following in efforts to ensure a
level and equitable framework can be used by all.
Interview Schedule Cancelation
In the event of a necessary cancellation the Smith School requires that
the employer contact their staff contact immediately and email all scheduled
candidates to inform them of the cancelation. The reasons should be
communicated, including if the position opening has closed or what steps
will be taken to continue with the recruiting process following the
cancelation. Unless cancelation is due to an emergency or unforeseen event,
we request that cancelations are noted no less than 24 hours in advance of
the scheduled interviews.
Time-Limited or Exploding Job Offers
We strongly recommend that you provide students with no less than three
weeks to make an informed and responsible decision about accepting or
declining an offer.
Exploding offers put enormous pressure on students to make decisions
before they have had an opportunity to experience the benefits of
interviewing and considering various employers and jobs. Accepting offers
without an appropriate amount of time to consider may result in a less than
optimal fit between the student and potential employer. This refers to job
positions as well as signing bonuses.
If you encounter any student taking an unreasonable amount of time to
respond to an offer please contact our office; our staff will address the
issue with the student to ensure the success of our continued collaboration.
Job Offer Deadlines (for all organizations
recruiting through Smith)
Fall Recruiting Season
Full-time Offers to
Summer Interns
Students should be given until the Monday, November 2, 2009 to accept or
decline offers to allow them time to participate in fall on-campus

opportunity to consider all available options and deprives all employers the
opportunity for equal access to students during the fall recruiting season.

students Graduating Spring and Summer
Students graduating in the spring or summer should be given until November
30, 2009 or a minimum of three weeks from the date of offer (whichever comes
later) to accept or decline offers.

Offer Withdrawal
Offers withdrawn to students may occur due to financial circumstances; in
this case Smith and students should be notified as quickly as possible. In
the event of an offer withdrawal for reasons other than economic
constraints, we request that you connect with your staff contact immediately
and prior to actions with the student.
Please note that Smith considers reneging on an offer a serious matter
and requests to be notified immediately if a student reneges on an
acceptance of an internship or full-time job offer so that respective and
appropriate action can be taken.
