Southwest Campus Gateway Construction Outside VMH
Clock TowerIn July 2007 fences went up outside the main entrance to Van Munching Hall as construction of the university's Southwest Campus Gateway began. Lee Comstock, director of operations at Smith, says, "This Gateway will serve as the main pedestrian entrance to the campus on the south side. As part of this construction, a clock tower will be constructed." Additional plantings are also planned and this effort should address the pooling of water that currently occurs in the Mowatt Lane Parking Garage, adds Comstock. This is just one phase of the southwest facilities development master plan.

Site ImprovementsThis project is expected to finish before the end of 2007 and during that time the usual pathway from Mowatt Lane Garage into Van Munching Hall has been closed, making it necessary to exit the garage from the north door into the U6 parking lot adjacent to the garage. This construction also requires the temporary loss of approximately 16 parking spaces in lot U6. Handicap access to and from the garage will be through the east side door (nearest South Campus Commons). The sidewalk along the south end of Van Munching by Mowatt Lane will be closed up to the loading dock.
