Ken White
Assistant Dean, Marketing Communications
Ken White, Ph.D., was named executive director of marketing communications at
the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business on November 1,
2010. He leads a team responsible for the School’s efforts in branding,
marketing, media relations, web and online communication, social media,
publications, internal communication and public relations. In addition to his
full time role, he also teaches communication in the Smith School’s executive
education program.
White, who has spent 20 years in higher education, joined the Smith School
after serving as vice president for communication and marketing at the
University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business for six years.
Before his work at Darden, he was vice president for communication and
marketing at the Virginia Military Institute and Northwest Missouri State
University.
He began his career in higher education as an assistant professor of mass
communication. Before that, he spent six years as an award-winning television
sports anchor and reporter.
White serves on GMAC’s Communication Advisory Board. He also volunteers as a
professional advisor to PRSA.
His work has been recognized for excellence by CASE, IABC, the Educational
Advertising Awards and PRSA. He was named Edinboro University of Pennsylvania’s
2008 Alumnus of the Year.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, White earned his doctorate in communication
from the University of Missouri. He was awarded master’s and bachelor’s degrees
from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
He and his wife have three daughters. The family enjoys the outdoors and
spending time at their log cabin.
